Harp Interviews Oberst

Harp Magazine, which is quickly becoming my favorite publication, recently sat down with Conor Oberst (ya know, he's in that one band, Bright Eyes) for an interview that I very thoroughly enjoyed reading. You get to see a bit of Conor's lighter side — there is joking, REAL LIFE JOKING! All this, and only two - four mentions of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, etc. (a frighteningly small number for an interview with Conor). I included two mp3's — one is a John Prine cover, and one is the Cassadaga track which is discussed a lot in the interview: Hot Knives.

I have to admit, I just don't get all the hype with Bright Eyes or anything else Conor has done. Sure he's talented and all, but I think everyone is nuts if they think he's the next Dylan. So, if you can, please explain what the big deal is, cause I don't get it at all.

Abby,
I do not agree with the Dylan comparisons, I don't think our generation has a Dylan because I don't think the circumstances are anywhere near the same that they were in the sixties which allowed Dylan to become the iconic figure he is. (I love me some Dylan but Cohen was a better lyricist anyways)

I think people just make the comparison because of the nature of the songs he writes (protest songs, by nature.) I love conor's music but some of it is unlistenable. That being said I'll see him on Saturday, I'll let ya know how it goes.

I guess if you don't don't see a "big deal", then there is not one.

I however do see one. Personally I relate to the lyrics, and musically I am always blown away with the sometimes subtle, complexity of the melodies, and compositions. And once you realize the age at which he was accomplishing all of this, it just amplifies the astonishment.

And I believe trying to compare Conor with anyone is ignorant and pointless. Take it for what it is.
